Product Designer

Pittsburgh, PA or Remote
full-time

About the role

Troupe's Product Designer will be both a strategic and highly critical development role for our company as we bring our solution to market, with a significant emphasis placed on building a successful AI-interfacing user experience.

Who Youʼll Work With:

  • CEO, CPO, and a starpowered eng. team consisting of humans and agents. Youʼll report directly to the CEO and CPO.
  • This is a highly impactful role where your daily work materially impacts our direction.

What you'll do

What Youʼll Work On:

  • Own the end-to-end product design function — from research and discovery through interaction design, visual design, and production-ready handoff as the sole designer.
  • Tackle Troupe's core design challenge: transforming dense, multi-dimensional intelligence into interfaces that feel simple, intuitive, and immediately actionable. You'll decide what to show, what to hide, and how to progressively reveal complexity.
  • Design the conversational and agentic AI experiences within the product — the natural language interfaces, agent-driven workflows, and the interplay between AI-generated outputs and traditional UI surfaces. You'll shape how users ask questions, receive answers, and take action through our UX and our AI agent.
  • Establish and maintain Troupe's design system, ensuring visual & interaction consistency.
  • Partner directly with the CEO, CPO, and engineering team to define product direction, prioritize what gets built, and make scope and UX tradeoffs in real time. In a team this size, you're not downstream of product decisions, you're in the room making them.
  • Conduct user research (interviews, usability testing, behavioral analysis) to build conviction about what users actually need versus what they say they need.
  • Define and track design quality metrics — usability benchmarks, task completion rates, time-to-insight — so design decisions are grounded in evidence, not just intuition.
  • Create the artifacts that move the team forward: flows, wireframes, prototypes, specs, and whatever else is needed, including implementing certain design changes via Claude Code.
  • Provide lead assistance on other design needs, including website and marketing assets.

What we're looking for

The Qualifications You Bring:

  • 3+ years of product design experience with significant time spent as the primary/sole designer at an early-stage company. You've built design functions, not just contributed.
  • A portfolio that demonstrates a mastery of integrating AI-driven and AI-automated
workflows into your daily/weekly toolsets, rhythms, and cadences.
  • A portfolio that demonstrates mastery of information-dense product design — dashboards,
analytics tools, data platforms, or similar domains where the core challenge is making complex information easily accessible.
  • Deep experience designing AI-native or conversational interfaces in production. You
understand the unique UX challenges of LLM-powered products: managing
unpredictability, setting user expectations, designing for partial/streaming outputs, handling errors gracefully, and blending conversational and graphical interaction patterns.
  • Strong information architecture and systems thinking skills. You can look at a sprawling problem space and create an organizational structure that makes sense to users on day one and scales as the product grows.
  • Highly proficient in Figma or Vercel (or equivalent), with the ability to move fluidly between low-fidelity exploration and high-fidelity, production-ready design.
  • Highly proficient frontend literacy and dev skills (HTML/CSS, React, JS), including proven expertise implementing in Claude Code.
  • Experience establishing design systems from scratch.
  • Strong user research instincts — you know when to talk to users vs. when to trust your judgment and ship.
  • Comfort operating as the technical center of gravity for design in a very small team, where you set the bar, make high-leverage decisions, and move fast without a safety net.
  • Bias toward shipping and iterating. You'd rather put something real in front of users and learn than polish mockups indefinitely.
